By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett has changed his mind. Pennsylvania, Corbett had said, wasn’t ready to decide about running a health-insurance exchange because information from the federal government proved insufficient. Wednesday, two days before the deadline to decide, Pennsylvania became the 28th state to allow the federal government take over the process. “Pennsylvanians have waited long enough for answers, and continuing this environment of uncertainty harms Pennsylvania businesses and consumers who are attempting to prepare for the changes created by the ACA,” Corbett wrote in a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. It’s the latest turn in Pennsylvania’s …

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Corbett said that expanding Medicaid in accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act would cost the state millions of dollars that it doesn’t have. “I don’t think there’s any way we can absorb this,” Corbett said of the expansion costs, while speaking to the Pennsylvania Press Club recently. As multiple states make their announcements on whether or not to expand Medicaid to more residents, Pennsylvania has yet to come out one way or the other. But Corbett was specific in citing associated costs, adding that Pennsylvania may not have room in the budget to cover them. Kevin Harley, Corbett’s press secretary, said later that the state is still waiting to hear back …

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent, R-15th, released this statement about his vote Wednesday to repeal Obamacare: “The 2010 health care law contains numerous detrimental policies that not only fail to appropriately address the complex problems of our health care system, but hurt our economy and hardworking American families. "Repealing the law would allow Congress to enact meaningful reform measures that reduce cost, expand access and improve quality. Its repeal would also prevent the imposition of over 20 new or higher taxes that will cost Americans $675 billion over the next decade and stifle economic growth. "While the political reality is repeal will not occur under this Administration, which still considers the deeply flawed law its signature …

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — Requiring individuals to purchase health care is constitutional. Withholding extensive federal funding from states as punishment is not constitutional. Also: paying a tax for not buying health insurance is constitutional. On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the major components Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that includes the controversial individual mandate on the grounds that Congress has powers to levy taxes and fees. The decision was 5-4, with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the majority. Upholding the act will give hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians access to health care, whether through an individually purchased policy or through a Medicaid expansion. …

Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senators release reactions to the ruling.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Affordable Care Act, known colloquially as "Obamacare," upholding the constitutionality of the act in a ruling Thursday morning, according to a report from the Supreme Court website. Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senators released reactions to the ruling. Sen. Pat Toomey (R): “I am extremely disappointed. Today’s decision is a jarring blow to our 200-year-old tradition of constitutionally limited government and personal liberty,” Toomey said. “ The Supreme Court’s decision doesn’t change the fact that President Obama’s health care law is a terrible policy that will impose new taxes, increase the cost of health care and cost our country jobs. It is now up to Congress to repeal Obamacare and enact common-…

By G. Terry Madonna & Michael L.Young The New York Times calls Pennsylvania a “toss up state.” Others have tagged it a “battleground state” and even a “swing state.” Electoral labels aside, Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes comprise the second largest prize among the competitive states. Not surprisingly, both presidential campaigns seem to be taking the state seriously despite Barack Obama’s approximate 8-point lead and a string of Democratic victories stretching back to 1988. But if the Keystone State is in play now, it may not be for long once an impending Supreme Court decision is handed down. Shortly, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to announce whether the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obama Care) passes constitutional …

At Bethlehem forum, a congressional candidate, two local doctors and a nurse say ‘Obamacare’ will destroy the health care system.
President Obama’s signature health care law is going to undermine doctor-patient relationships, close hospitals, cripple small businesses and result in rationed care, according to four health care professionals, including a congressional candidate, who spoke at a forum in Bethlehem Wednesday night. The Lehigh Valley Coalition for Health Care Reform, a nonprofit with ties to conservative and physicians groups, presented the two-hour forum at Bethlehem Area Public Library to a sympathetic crowd of about 25. The panel included Laureen Cummings, a Scranton Tea Party founder and the Republican candidate for the redistricted 17th congressional district, currently held by Tim Holden. Cummings, an LPN who owns a home health care agency in Old …
