At What Age Should Kids be Allowed to Date?

Someday, the birds and the bees are going to fly into your child’s life. How will you handle it?

Moms Talk is a weekly feature on all Lehigh Valley Patches in which local parents, caregivers and other members of the community are invited to share opinions and advice on parenting issues. This week’s Moms Talk topic relates to kids and dating: It will happen eventually. Your son or daughter will come home from school and say Johnny and Susie are boyfriend and girlfriend. Harmless-ish, when the fledgling romance is confined to the school day. But, ultimately, things will change and some boy, will ask some girl to go on an actual “date.” What will you do if some boy, asks your girl to a movie? How will you react if your boy wants to go to the mall with some girl? Does it matter if the boy-girl activity happens during the day? If it’s done…

At What Age Should Children Use Public Restrooms Alone?

The challenge lies in balancing the youngster’s safety needs with the need for independence.

Moms Talk is a weekly feature on all Lehigh Valley Patches in which local parents, caregivers and other members of the community are invited to share opinions and advice on parenting issues. This week’s Moms Talk topic relates to public restrooms: Some experts say that the first step in allowing a child to use a public restroom alone is setting very clear guidelines for the trip to the bathroom: Go in, do your business, wash your hands and leave. Period. Others argue that being able to able to take care of bathroom needs alone is one thing while being able to protect oneself from harm could be another. I always bring my five year old girl in the bathroom with me, and my eight year old son only goes to the men's room alone unless I am very familiar with a location and it is not crowded, or if my husband goes in with him. I know some day they might complain about this, but for now I try to keep their potential exposure to danger to a minimum this way.   more ›

Should You Pay Kids for Doing Chores?

Experts agree that it's a good idea to start teaching kids about money from an early age, but there is little advice about how best to do it.

Moms Talk is a weekly feature on all Lehigh Valley Patches in which local parents, caregivers and other members of the community are invited to share opinions and advice on parenting issues. This week’s Moms Talk topic relates to kids and allowances: Most experts agree that it is important to start teaching kids about money from an early age. But, that’s the extent of their agreement. There really isn’t much consistent guidance out there about the “how.” Do you pay your child an allowance? If so, at what age do you begin paying an allowance? How much do you pay? Do you give kids money for doing nothing? What kind of message does that send? Or, do you pay your youngster for doing jobs around the house? So, tell us what you think: Should you…

At What Age is it OK to Leave a Child Home Alone?

There is no legal minimum age in PA for children to be home without an adult.

Moms Talk is a weekly feature on all Lehigh Valley Patches in which local parents are invited to share opinions and advice on parenting issues. This week’s Moms Talk topic relates to leaving children home alone: A handful of states do have legal minimum ages for children left home alone, but Pennsylvania isn’t one of them. Many state agencies across the country have published guidelines on this topic, with 12 years old being the age most frequently recommended. Beyond that, there’s a fairly common sentiment that the child’s maturity should be what shapes a parents’ decision, not the child’s chronological age. What are your thoughts on leaving children home alone? At what age would you be comfortable leaving your child at home without …

I am just curious, legally, is there a specific age requirement for allowing children to go somewhere alone? Or to be home alone? Say a serious accident happens and police arrive at the home-what age is permitted to be home alone without the parents getting into legal trouble? They go to bus stops alone everyday-noone is fined . What is the difference-gas station or a bus stop (some can be pretty…   more ›
