Seeing Grownups Serve Community Teaches Kids a Lot

By staying active in our community, we show our children what it means to give back.

I have this issue where I feel like I’m never doing enough. I currently have four part-time jobs and volunteer for two non-profit organizations (oh yes, and I can’t leave out the part about being a stay-at-home mom and wife). And I still feel like that’s not the most I could be doing. I think I have a problem. My closest friends and family often question why I get involved with so many things, why I spread myself so thin, and what good it does me. I guess it’s just in my blood. When I see an opportunity, I want to grab it. I want to run full speed and accomplish something I’ve never done before. I want to fill a gap that needs to be filled. I want to help. So when I found out the Εmmaus Borough Special Entertainment Commission had several …

Very good article. I would love to help out by helping out animals in need of foster homes, just know my husband would never go for it lol. And it would still be teaching the kids as a way of volunteering your time to help out.   more ›

Can You Open Your Heart?

In 1877, our state was one of the first to begin hosting inner-city children from New York City through the Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit organization founded by Rev. William Parsons, a minister of a rural church in Sherman, Pa. For the past 136 years, approximately 1.7 million underprivileged children ages 6 to 12 have been traveling to host families’ homes for one to two weeks during the summer. The mission? To give them a glimpse of a future they can strive to obtain. To give them a break from the heat and noise of the city. It’s that simple. The bad news…so few host families have…

Seven Generations Begins Playground Construction

After several years of not having a formal playground for its students, Seven Generations Charter School volunteers join together to build one.

On Aug. 6, volunteers gathered at the back of the Seven Generations Charter School (SGCS) property on Minor Street in Emmaus with hopes of creating a functional playground for the school. This date marked the first of a series of Saturday "work days" during which parents, teachers, and those interested in supporting the school could commit their time to the cause. Work will continue until the job is completed, hopefully in time for the first day of school on Tues., Sept. 6. With a minimal budget, the school's heavily encouraged theme of "reuse" was put into action as old rubber tires, tree stumps and mulch from Emmaus Borough's compost center were incorporated to build a formal playground for the children of SGCS. "We have a partnership …
