Upper Milford Spring Sports Signups Saturday

Upper Milford Youth Association will hold signups for baseball, softball and soccer at the Upper Milford Township Building on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Upper Milford Youth Association invites families interested in playing a spring sport to head over to the Upper Milford Township building from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Right now, registration is open for softball, baseball and spring soccer. Each sport is organized by gender and age and fees determined accordingly. For those families who can’t make it to the township building on Saturday, information and online registration can be found at www.umya.org

As you look out your window this morning, it may be hard to believe, but spring really is lurking right around the corner. And, along with spring, comes spring sports. Whether your spring sport of choice is baseball, softball, t-ball or soccer, if your child plays through the Upper Milford Youth Association, now’s the time to register, according to the UMYA web site. And, registration couldn’t be easier – the whole process can completed online through www.umya.org.

Does Title IX Need Fixing?

Title IX, which revolutionized women’s sports, is often blamed for the demise of some men’s sports.

  The University of Richmond is ending its men’s soccer team and the athletic director blames Title IX, the 1972 federal act that sparked a revolution in women’s sports by providing basic parity with men’s sports. That hit home for two reasons: First, because Sean Baker, a Salisbury High School soccer star with whom my older son played, is now on the Richmond squad and will lose his team. Second, because I owe a lot to Title IX. When my son found out Baker – an outstanding player and a terrific young man – would have to end his college soccer career or transfer, he was outraged. Upper Milford Youth Association Soccer Signups Wrapping Up

Aug. 15 is the last day to register for fall soccer with Upper Milford Youth Association without a late fee.

Upper Milford Youth Association (UMYA) fall soccer signups are under way for boys and girls ages 6-18, according to the UMYA web site. The last day to register for the fall soccer program without incurring a late fee is Aug. 15. Upper Milford Youth Association runs a kindersoccer program for children ages 4 and 5. The last day to register for kindersoccer without paying a late fee is also Aug. 15. At all ages the UMYA soccer program is “recreational,” meaning that its primary goal is to teach kids about the fundamentals of the game. The entire registration process can be handled online. EHS to Host Boys' Soccer Clinic

Deadline to register is Thurs., Sept. 15.

If a budding young athlete in your life gets a kick out of soccer, there are a couple of dates you need to put on your calendar. Thursday, Sept. 15 is the deadline to register for the 2011 Emmaus High School Boys’ Soccer Clinic. The clinic will be held rain or shine on Wed., Oct. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the EHS Memorial Field. The cost of the clinic is $25 per player and that includes a 2011 soccer clinic t-shirt for those who register by Sept. 15. Conducted by EHS coaches and players, the program is designed for U8 through U14 boys soccer players and will consist of drills and exercises to improve soccer skills and speed of play. UMYA Plans Columbus Day Soccer Tournament

Tournament is designed for recreational players.

Matt Skekel, coordinator of Upper Milford Youth Association’s soccer program, wanted to give UMYA players the opportunity to play in a tournament and develop more on the field. So he’s put together the first ever UMYA Columbus Day Fall Soccer Tournament on October 8 and 9. Skekel says, "There are very few recreational soccer tournaments in the area. They’re all for travel and premier teams and can be very competitive. Our tournament will be competitive, and scores and standing kept, but we will be considered a recreational tournament." By recreational, Skekel means, "a developmental program to help kids learn the fundamentals of soccer while enjoying the game played with friends and neighbors." UMYA Kindersoccer has Uniforms to Fill

Four and 5 year olds can still register to play soccer in the fall.

Registration for Upper Milford Youth Association’s Kindersoccer program is officially closed, but since there are some extra uniforms, 4- and 5-year-old boys and girls can still sign up to play. Coordinator Kathy Nowroozani says, "To my knowledge we have never turned a child away." So far 45 children have signed up to play at Lenape Park with a crew of all rookie coaches. Nowroozani will be guiding the coaches as much as possible but they’re encouraged to Google practice ideas. Basic ball handling skills are taught while players learn to work together as a team. Soccer rules are emphasized as the season progresses, but the focus for this age group is primarily fun. Co-ed practice and games are Wednesday nights starting after Labor Day and …

It's the Last Day to Register for UMYA Fall Soccer

You can still sign up after Aug. 14, but you'll have to pay a late fee.

Sunday, Aug. 14 is the final day to register for fall soccer through the Upper Milford Youth Association. After that, players can still sign up, but they'll be charged a late registration fee in addition to the regular UMYA fees.
