East Penn may Look at Starting Foundation to Help With Budget

Superintendent of Schools recommends that East Penn Board of School Directors consider launching a foundation.

At the Feb. 13 meeting of the East Penn Board of School Directors, East Penn Superintendent of Schools Thomas L. Seidenberger told the board that he thinks the district should explore the possibility of setting up a foundation for East Penn. “It’s something I think we should take a look at,” he said. “It’s a lot of work, but something we may want to seriously look at coming up. It would provide alternative funds for what we do. It’s the purpose of why these things are constructed.” The key to establishing a successful foundation, he said, is honing in on the goals of that foundation. The Big Freeze: East Penn School Budget in Crisis

What will East Penn do now that Gov. Tom Corbett has frozen part of the funding for public education?

East Penn’s school board votes on the district’s preliminary budget Monday, Feb. 14. Here’s a primer of what you need to know: On Feb. 3, superintendents from school districts all over the state were notified that Gov. Corbett had frozen $364.3 million in state funding. Of that, $337 million affects state funding to school districts. According to reports, the silver lining is that the state plans to offset that freeze with federal stimulus money and federal Education Jobs funding. All of that federal money, however, vanishes at the end of this year. So, as East Penn faces a bleak 2011-12, it seems now that 2012-13 may be even worse.
