About 15 women came to see how the Lehigh Valley Roller Girls roll and learn more before tryouts on Feb. 4.
About 15 women showed up for open recruitment night hosted by the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls on Monday at the Independence Family Fun Center in Schnecskville. "We'll teach anybody the game but you do have to learn how to skate," said Captain Lynn Diesel. There are currently 34 Lehigh Valley Rollergirls and they are looking to grow. Diesel said it can be hard to keep players because it's a huge commitment. They practice almost year round - taking a break in November and December - for two hours a day, three-days a week. On Monday, seasoned players showed potential players the basics and coached them on what to practice. Tryouts are Feb. 4. Meet the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls and see a demonstration of their skills in Schnecksville this evening.
The Lehigh Valley Rollergirls (LVRG) will hold a new skater orientation at the Independence Family Fun Center in Schnecksville at 7 tonight, Jan. 28. According to Michele “Rose Beef” Dolgos, LVRG’s head coach, this will be an opportunity for prospective skaters to meet members of the team, hear what is expected of LVRG members, and learn the history of the league. There will also be demonstrations of the skills needed to pass the new skater tryout on Feb. 4. “To qualify for our new skater 'Boot Camp,' skaters will have to, at minimum, be able to perform the following skills: skating while balancing on one leg, cross-over skating, one knee falls, plow stops, and they must be able to complete at least eight laps on a regulation roller derby …

Why Go: The fundraising event honors the life of Ben Yorgey, son of Kent and Ardyth Yorgey of Macungie. Ben, an Emmaus High School grad, was 24 when he died from an anoxic brain injury caused by a seizure suffered on May 5, 2009. Events for the whole family include a 5K run, walk and kids' run, motorcycle ride and Special Olympics swim meet on Saturday. These women are amazing, talented and so nice! My mother-in-law tried out for Roller Derby many moons ago and was delighted to meet the local team at a fund-raiser last fall. Go Girls! Hope to see them in action later this month.   more ›
