Westboro Baptists Don't Show but Counter-Protesters Ready

Westboro Baptists did not show up at Asbury United Methodist and First Baptist churches in South Whitehall, or two Allentown churches, Sunday morning but counter-protesters were there in case they did.

Update: 10:45 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 20 Westboro Baptists do not show up at First Baptist Church in South Whitehall, which was the group's fourth targeted church in the Lehigh Valley. South Whitehall Police Lt. John Christman, who is at First Baptist, said, "It’s a non-event. It’s been non-violent. It’s more social than anything." As for the controversial Westboro Baptists, he said, "I feel fortunate they didn’t show." Counter-protesters came to First Baptist, as they did to three other churches earlier Sunday, turning out in case Westboro Baptists did show up. Many carried signs against hate. I am not into church but do things for others and is that not what church is an example of. Being there for other and help other less able to. There are different forms of what we all believe in. Protest Causes Emmaus man to Drop Plan to Sell Guns

Reaction from neighbors at zoning hearing, including a petition with more than 50 signatures, prompts resident to withdraw request.

David Gardner appeared before the Emmaus zoning board on Thursday to request a special exception that would allow him to use his residence on State Road to sell firearms over the Internet. By the end of the hearing Gardner withdrew his request in response to the comments and protests from the audience, his neighbors. Gardner had wanted to set up an Internet-based business where he could sell antique firearms and CNR firearms. CNR firearms are any gun that was manufactured 50 years from the current date. According to Gardner, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives requires firearm dealers to have physical business that customers can visit in the event of a complication. Sounds to me that most of these folks just don't like him. Selling antiques is a business, often done form the home, even if the main product is a gun. Personal dislike and even abhorrence should not be reason to deny this man a livlihood. I am surprised that so many people can disply their hate in such a manner.   more ›
