Gov. Tom Corbett's involvement in the Penn State child rape scandal continues to be controversial

By G. Terry Madonna & Michael L.Young It was a shocker. And it grabbed headlines, not just in Pennsylvania butacross the nation. Governor Tom Corbett in an abrupt turnabout is suing the NCAA for sanctions imposed on Penn State University in the notorious Sandusky scandal. But how should we interpret Corbett's now widely reported intentions? Are they the brilliant political strategy of a governor determined to right a wrong and defend his state against the bullying tactics of an out of control regulatory body? Or are they the desperate flailing of an embattled governor feverishly trying to rescue his own career from a political defeat some predict? What do you think of Corbett's NCAA lawsuit? This lawsuit is nothing but a chance for him to set his friends/wealthy donors up with a financial windfall. Let's be honest, the primary target of this suit is to prevent the $60 million fine that was imposed, from leaving the state. The NCAA has stipulated the fine go to Non-Profit organizations that plan to use the money for childhood sexual abuse education, prevention and healing. If he …   more ›

How Bluegrass Music Saved My Soul

Here's how bluegrass music nurtured the emotional well-being of one struggling college student, and how it's carried through to her life as an adult.

When you hear the word "bluegrass" what comes to mind? For me, it brings warmth, happiness, fun and a sense of goodness and security. I find it interesting that I have such a draw to this genre of music since I never really grew up listening to it. Some say I have an 'old soul.' After organizing our "1st Annual Bluegrass in the Park" festival in Emmaus this past weekend, someone asked me why I was so driven to make this happen. Why would a person of my age be inclined to this particular style of music? I simply love bluegrass. I had never really thought about the why or how. Whenever I hear the fine notes of the mandolin or the plucking of the banjo, it makes my soul smile. I want to get up and dance! I want to grab an instrument and let …

AG: Lawmakers Should Make Penn State Comply with Freedom of Info Law

If the PA legislature follows Auditor General Jack Wagner's wishes, the embattled university will have to make public most of its internal documents.

By Jared Sichel | PA Independent HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania’s top auditor has a message for Penn State — things must change. Auditor General Jack Wagner has called on the Legislature to order the troubled university to comply with the state’s Right-to-Know law. “I would hope that this would be a priority in September, and the General Assembly could deal with it prior to the end of the legislative session in November,” Wagner said. The transparency law, which makes public most internal documents at government agencies, now applies to Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities. But Penn State is an independently managed, “state-related” school, and thus exempt from giving the public access to internal documents, such as emails between top …

Disgraced ex-Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of child sex abuse Friday night, resulting in an effective life sentence for the 68-year-old. The guilty verdicts include 25 felony counts. Combined, Sandusky could be sentenced to 442 years in prison. Dressed in a brown sports coat, Sandusky immediately was taken into custody and led from the courthouse in handcuffs. The jury—which included many people with close ties to Penn State—deliberated for only 20 hours on 48 charges against Sandusky. The two-week trial featured damning testimony against Sandusky, who was accused of performing anal and oral sex on boys as young as 8. Despite the lack of physical evidence and the time lapse since the sex abuse, …

Vengeance is mine saith the Lord God. However on earth, the man should never ever be allowed free to encounter children. I doubt be will have it as difficult in prison as he deserves. If I were his family I would legally change my name. Seriously, that man cannot have the conscience to admit ANYTHING he did. Disgusting.   more ›
