What's up with the Hess gas station on Route 309 in Orefield? It's sold three winning lottery tickets with large jackpots, in February, March and April.
What are the chances Wednesday's winning $60 million Powerball ticket will be sold at the Hess station on Route 309 in Orefield? About the same infinitesimal odds the same Hess gas station had in selling three winning lottery tickets with huge jackpots in the last three months. The long odds not only didn't deter customers from buying lottery tickets Monday, the rash of oddball wins actually attracted customers, such as Dawayne Brown, 23, of Orefield. "This is the first time I've bought a Powerball ticket," said Brown, who rushed out to buy a ticket after a co-worker at KidsPeace told him someone bought a lottery ticket worth $2 million at the lucky Hess station. The Hess station at 3640 Route 309 sold a winning Powerball ticket worth $2 …

Could privatizing the lottery mean fewer people will play?
Pennsylvanians do not want their lottery to be privatized, as Gov. Tom Corbett is proposing, according to a new Franklin & Marshall College Poll. The poll found that 47 percent of those polled strongly opposed the privatization with 17 somewhat opposing it. Only 7 percent were strongly in favor with 11 percent being somewhat in favor of the move. Most people polled, 75 percent, said they would play the lottery about the same amount as they do now if it were privatized, but a not insignificant number of people, 19 said they would play less frequently. The Franklin & Marshall College Poll interviewed 622 Pennsylvania voters between January 29 and February 3. The margin of error is reported as plus or minus 3.9 percentage points. A recent …

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — A British company poised to manage the Pennsylvania Lottery plans to boost the bottom line by getting more people to play lottery games. But some lawmakers are skeptical. Senate Finance Committee Minority Chairman Sen. John Blake, D-Lackawanna, said he still has reservations about the Corbett administration’s pursuit of a private management agreement with Camelot Global Services, even after a four-hour hearing Monday. The process was done without legislative oversight, and that worries Blake. “This is a scale of a decision that probably should’ve been, I would’ve preferred and I think the leadership in my caucus and many members in my caucus would’ve preferred, was something that was put to …
