Biden's Gun Policy Recommendations Come Today

The vice president has been meeting with parties on both sides of the gun control debate, as well as mental health advocates, as he crafts proposals in response to the Dec. 14 Newtown school shooting. And the NRA responds.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is expected to announce sweeping policy changes to gun laws and mental health care on Tuesday, two weeks earlier than expected. In Pennsylvania, two lawmakers say they want teachers to carry guns. Biden's recommendations, at the request of President Barack Obama, are a response to the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that claimed the life of 20 first-graders and six educators. According to a report by the Huffington Post, Biden's proposals are likely to address the availability and access to certain types of guns and ammunition, and tackle the issue of data collection and background checks. While Connecticut State Police continue their investigation into the Newtown shooting, authorities have …

Emmaus Mayor Wants Tougher Gun Laws

Mayor Winfield Iobst of Emmaus is among several U.S. mayors signing

Editor's note: The following is a letter sent to the White House Wednesday from the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Among the mayors signing is Emmaus Mayor Winfield Iobst. In the last year, Emmaus has experienced multiple armed bank robberies and most recently, the man dubbed by the media as the "Bicycle Bandit," who had used a gun to rob the Liberty Bell Beverages in Emmaus and other locations, was arrested in Emmaus. This letter is in response to a different gun crime: the school shooting last week in Newtown, Conn. Dear President Obama, On Friday, December 14th the entire nation watched as parents stood outside the Sandy Hook Elementary Schooland waited, desperately hoping to be reunited with their children.  That moment will never …

Emmaus mom Organizes Effort to Send Artwork to Sandy Hook

Lisa Fiore is asking everyone she knows to create artwork for the children and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School as a way to let them know people are thinking about them.

An Emmaus mom is urging her family and friends to grab their crayons and some construction paper and show their support for the Connecticut elementary school where last week a lone gunman went on a shooting rampage, killing 20 children and six adults. Lisa Fiore has been asking everyone she knows to create artwork for the children and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School to let them know that people all over the country are “thinking about them and holding them in healing thoughts.” And now, Fiore, mom to a second-grader at Shoemaker Elementary School, is asking the Emmaus Patch community to join the effort. “The children and families of this community are forever changed. I would love to show support to the school from towns all over …

Dear Newtown, Connecticut

This open letter in response to the tragic school shooting was penned by Hellertown native Emily Doll, a doctoral student at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. It was first published on her Facebook page on Friday.

Dear Newtown, Connecticut, I don’t know you. I’ve never been to your town, I don’t know your friends and families and streets and memories. Like most people, I didn’t know you existed until today, and now my ears keep echoing with your name and your cries; now I close my eyes and picture your woods; now I think of you every time I inhale, exhale, breathe.  I don’t know you, but my heart shattered for you today in a way I can’t comprehend yet. I don’t have answers for you, only shared questions; I don’t have reasons for you, only resonating whys. I’m not there, I’m not with you, I’m not part of you tonight, but from 317 miles away, know that I am grieving with you. I don’t have the intellect to understand what happened today. I don’t have …

If people need to write about their thoughts following this horrific incident, I think that is fair. It is hard to find the lines that separate because of the longstanding issues. When our president spoke last night in Newtown, he said that we must make changes to honor the memory of these victims. It is a discussion and debate that is LONG overdue. The letter from Emily Doll was eloquent and …   more ›
