Ring in 2013 with a few things you probably didn’t know about celebrating a new year.
Here are a few fun facts about celebrating a new year that might stay with you longer than your resolutions: 1. The first New Year’s Eve ball was made because of a ban on fireworks. That first ball weighed in at 700 pounds, but that’s nothing -- the current Times Square ball tips the scales at 12,000 pounds, and is made of Waterford Crystal. 2. The most popular New …

Live music, cash bar, free champagne toast planned for inaugural open air New Year's Eve Celebration on Main Street.
The Downtown Bethlehem Association will host the first ever Main Street New Year’s Eve celebration to ring in 2013. The open-air celebration in the Historic Downtown will feature live music with the Trouble City All-Stars and the Lehigh Valley Harmonizers, a cash bar, food vendors and a free champagne toast at midnight. In Bethlehem, we all know about the Peeps drop, but this event will culminate at midnight with a “Bethlehem Star rise.” “Our board of directors wanted to pull this together because there is nothing that happens anymore at midnight in Bethlehem,” said Samantha Schwartz, manager of the DBA. Ring in 2012 with a few things you probably didn’t know about celebrating a new year.
It never ceases to amaze me how the beginning of a new year can bring such a newfound sense of responsibility, renewed hope in lost endeavors, and pledges to change the way we think, act and feel. Of course, by mid-January those hopes and pledges usually dissolve into empty promises, leaving only a foggy memory of a really awesome New Year’s Eve party. That said, here are a few fun facts about celebrating a new year that might stay with you: 1. The first New Year’s Eve ball was made because of a ban on fireworks. In 1904, the owner of the New York Times threw a huge New Year’s Eve party with an enormous fireworks display. Tonight's the night, what will you watch drop?
The countdown has begun, it's almost 2012! And while a million people are expected to cram into Times Square to watch the ball drop, here are a few other options for you to ponder. 5. A Crayon- The Crayola Factory in Easton will host its annual kid-friendly event, which includes a 10-foot-long Crayola Crayon at 8pm. Early enough for kids to get in on the excitement and for you to head out to see Allentown drop... 4. A Bell- This year, Allentown is celebrating its 250th anniversary with a bell drop. The event, which Allentown hopes will become annual, also nods to A-town's claim to fame...when the Liberty Bell was hidden from the British during the Revolutionary War. But if that's too historical, why don't you go see Harrisburg drop... 3. A…

Will you party all night or hit the sack before midnight?
There’s just one more night to go before the big countdown to 2012. Some people plan their New Year’s Eve activities for what seems like an entire year. Others just wing it and let the chips fall where they may. Kids can complicate the New Year’s Eve planning further, as it’s tough for them to stay awake until the proverbial ball drops and babysitters can cost a small fortune. So as Emmaus Patch finalizes plans for welcoming 2012, your friends and neighbors want to hear from you about what you’ll be doing to ring in the New Year. Take our poll and share further details about how you’ll greet 2012 in the comments.
