StarWatch: See Moon's Rendezvous With Venus

May produces some of the most spectacular nights of the year.

By Gary Becker StarWatch 871 for the week of May 5, 2013 “It's May! It’s May, the lusty month of May! That lovely month when everyone goes blissfully astray…”  That’s Guinevere singing about one of the joyful perks regarding life at Camelot, in mythical England where by law the seasons had regimented time slots, could never be too severe, and the rain could never fall till after sundown. No wonder the empire fell. No astronomer in his right mind would ever want to live in a place like that. Yet in the real world, May produces some of the most spectacular nights of the year. Gorgeous warm days with turquoise skies blend seamlessly into transparent, temperate nights where the stars seem so close you can almost reach out and touch them.  I’m …

Michelle Obama Urges 2,400 in Bethlehem to Get 'One More'

First lady Michelle Obama delivers fiery speech before 2,400 supporters at Moravian College.

First Lady Michelle Obama came to Bethlehem Thursday night and delivered a fiery speech aimed at inspiring the 2,400 in attendance to get at least one more person to the polls in November to help re-elect her husband. “Barack has said this election will be even closer than the last one. This election could come to those last few thousand votes, particularly in this state,” she told the standing-room-only crowd gathered at Moravian College in the Johnston Hall gym. “When you think of a few thousand votes spread out across the state, that could be the one new voter that you register, that one neighbor you get to the polls. That could be the difference. That could be the one that puts us over the top,” she continued. The first lady …

Fans Praise Michelle Obama Bethlehem Speech

Lehigh Valley residents welcome First Lady's words on economy, education.

If you were to make a list of potential gifts to bring a visiting first lady, you might not think "shovel." But that's what Chris Adams brought for Michelle Obama for her visit to Bethlehem's Moravian College Thursday evening. Granted, this wasn't just any shovel. It was designed by Green Heron Tools, the New Tripoli company Adams works for. It's called "Hers," specifically designed for women. "And we know Michelle Obama loves to garden," Adams said, waiting in a long line outside the college's Johnston Hall for Obama's speech. The only queston was whether she'd be able to bring it inside. "I don't want to get tackled by the Secret Service," Adams said. A campaign volunteer told Adams she wouldn't be tackled, but wasn't sure the shovel …

All First Ladies have jobs which are undefined and unpaid. they have the perks of being surrounded with Secret Service all the time; ditto their children; not my idea of a great life - very little privacy and the media jumping on every act, expression, food they eat, every choice. they are all amazing women who survive their time in the public eye. doubt if many would chose it as first choice.   more ›
