Breast Saved and Cancer Removed in Artful Blend of Treatment

Cancer surgeons and plastic surgeons are working together to help breast cancer patients avoid mastectomies in the Lehigh Valley

Lehigh Valley Health Network is offering an advancement in breast cancer surgery that is an artful blend of plastic surgery and cancer removal. The procedure - called oncoplasty - allowed Yrene Bodenstein of Lower Macungie Township to avoid a mastectomy when she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer at age 40. With oncoplasty, the surgical oncologist (cancer specialist) and plastic surgeon work together as they consider the extent of cancer surgery needed, the patient’s breast size and shape, and potential reconstruction techniques so the breasts will match.  The advancement reduces down time and emotional turmoil for patients while boosting their confidence, according to LVHN. More information is available in this LVHN article.

Texting While Walking Can Land You in ER

Texting while driving is certainly dangerous, but texting while walking is also landing people in the emergency room

Head's up! Walking with your head down while you text can land you in the emergency room. Reports of injuries to distracted walkers treated at hospital emergency rooms have more than quadrupled in the past seven years and are almost certainly underreported, according to an Associated Press report. Lehigh Valley Health Network has become known for it's aggressive "Stop Texting" campaign to discourage distracted driving. And that slogan works for distracted walking as well. Philadelphia officials are drafting a safety campaign that will be aimed in part at pedestrians who are looking at their devices instead of where they're going. One of the messages will be "pick your head up." Pennsylvania's law prohibiting texting while driving took …

And if you're walking for exercise, texting and even talking on a cell phone can slow your pace by as much as 33%, according to a Stony Brook University study published earlier this year. If you're making the time to exercise, make it count and keep your cell phone in your pocket.   more ›

This is absolutely wonderful! I live in Macungie not even 5 minutes away and think this is great. I will look into a new primary Dr. there now. I have an 11 yr old and can't wait until the walk in clinic opens. Also, I can now get my ultrasounds there since it is so close. Awesome for Macungie!   more ›

My story is not as positive as yours. After too many visits to the ER for a family member that ultimately lead to admission and followed by a week of hearing the doctors say....we don't know if he aspirated, but we will treat him as such even though his white count is good and lungs are good. We just don't know! Had enough of the constant indecisions of this idiot doctors, and took him to Sacred …   more ›

'12 Days of Robotics' may Become Annual Event

Emmaus High School Junior Chrissy Cilento talks to "12 Days of Robotics" founder and successful inaugural events and plans for the future.

Special to Emmaus Patch By Chrissy Cilento, Emmaus High School Junior Many patients are used to a here’s-your-bill-see-you-next-time approach to medicine, not ever really interacting with their doctors. The Lehigh Valley Health Network challenged that approach last month with its "12 Days of Robotics" program. The objective of the program was to get the community and its patients involved in the robotic surgery program by interacting with the actual robots used in surgery and the surgeons who make the magic happen. With events ranging from sushi eating to domino stacking, the hospital really succeeded in personalizing its medicine.  Among the many business participants in the "12 Days of Robotics" program, Kome at the Promenade Shops …

'12 Days of Robotics' Continues

Emmaus High School Junior Chrissy Cilento will emcee sushi surgeon competition at Kome in the Promenade Shops.

Special to Emmaus Patch By Chrissy Cilento, Emmaus High School Junior On Saturday, the good, old-fashioned spirit of competition inspired more than 100 victory-thirsty people to line up and compete in Lehigh Valley Health Network's (LVHN) first-ever Simulation Olympics qualifying event at the Agri-Plex in Allentown. The competitors used a simulator known as the dv Trainer from Mimic, like the ones used to train robotic surgeons at the hospital, to complete a challenge and receive a score. The event wasn’t just for future Olympians, though. There were dozens of science experiments and science clubs present at the Agri-Plex for people to check out and get interested in. Even small kids were expressing desires to one day grow up and be …

'12 Days of Robotics' Kicks off Today

Emmaus High School Junior Chrissy Cilento has been drummming up interest in "12 Days of Robotics" at EHS through Facebook and other means.

Special to Emmaus Patch By Chrissy Cilento, Emmaus High School Junior For decades now, robots have been represented under various lights. They’ve been friendly and comedic, like WALL-E and C-3PO. They’ve been menacing and dangerous, like Terminator and the armies of androids who try to take over the world in I-Robot. What people aren’t as familiar with, however, is the beneficial side of robots: the robots that save peoples’ lives. The Lehigh Valley Health Network is taking the use of robots to the ultimate level. The Robotic Surgery Patient Care Team has recently completed more than 1,500 surgeries and is known to have the most robotic surgery experience in the region. Thanks to LVHN’s robotic expertise, patients enjoy an expedited …
