Washington, DC -- As tens of thousands of flood-damaged cars enter the car market via auto auctions, two national consumer organizations, Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety (CARS) and National Consumers League (NCL), warned car buyers today to beware of new and used cars that suffered flood damage from Hurricane Sandy. "Flood cars are ticking automotive timebombs," said Rosemary Shahan, President of CARS. ”Flood cars are inherently unsafe, particularly since all the electronic systems that control the engine, brakes, air bags, and other vital safety systems are hopelessly contaminated and will inevitably fail. The groups noted that even consumers buying cars far away from where Sandy hit should be on the lookout for flood cars. “…

East Penn Superintendent of Schools Thomas L. Seidenberger tells the East Penn Board of School Directors Monday night that he will likely put in a formal request to change the 2012-2013 school calendar at the board’s next meeting.
East Penn Superintendent of Schools Thomas L. Seidenberger told the East Penn Board of School Directors at Monday night’s meeting that he expects the district will need February and March to make up two of the four days school was closed by Hurricane Sandy. East Penn schools were closed Oct. 29, 30, 31 and Nov. 1, and Seidenberger said he hopes two of those days will be absorbed by the “snow days” built into the school district calendar. The other two, he said, will need to come off of a scheduled break in February – presidents weekend -- and spring break in March. At this point, Seidenberger says he intends to ask the board at its next meeting on Dec. 3 to change Feb. 15 and March 28 from vacation days to regular school days. This will …

Students, faculty and staff collect items to help victims of Superstorm Sandy and then travel to Staten Island by bus to deliver the donations.
Editor's Note: The text of this article has been updated to reflect what the Emmaus High School group actually experienced in Staten Island. A group of 43 students, two teachers, an aide and a parent from Emmaus High School traveled by bus on Friday to deliver donated items to Staten Island, N.Y. -- one of the East Coast areas most devastated by Superstorm Sandy. The EHS team spent the day working at one of the Staten Island distribution hubs created to disseminate donatations to the people who need them. While there, the EHS contingency helped to sort and organize the items that have been sent to Staten Island from various parts of the United States. EHS Spanish teacher Claudi Risi, who organized the Emmaus High School relief effort for …

I thought Sandy was the end of our world. Another's tragedy helped me to realize how lucky we are.
“Who can say where the road goes, where the day goes? Only time.” ~ Enya As I sit in the coziness of our Cabin 4 in Hills Creek State Park, listening to songs from my "Memorial" playlist, my heart is heavy. We’ve had this weekend trip planned for months, and it just so happened to fall during a time of terrible heartache for so many. I am so ridiculously blessed. I feel guilty for being here, for having warmth, shelter, food, friends and above all, my family. Who am I to deserve this goodness? Today I’m writing straight from the heart. As Superstorm Sandy hit us last week, I thought surely I’d be writing about our efforts for survival. I would complain about the difficulties of keeping the house warm and the refrigerator cold with a single…

Employees help out, and you can, too.
It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate: https://donate.networkforgood.org/aol "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who are watching and wishing they could …

Emmaus Mom, when an adult is referring to "we" and using terms like "banked," it's patently obvious this is a union member. I don't know of any adult anywhere that has thought about this unless they're union.   more ›
