Hundreds of people are expected to take a very cold dip in the Delaware River on Saturday as the first ever Lehigh Valley Polar Plunge comes to Easton

The first-ever Lehigh Valley Polar Plunge is planned for Saturday at Scott Park along the Delaware River in Easton. The event will benefit Special Olympics and is expected to draw hundreds of participants. Cost to participate is $50. 2013 Plunge Schedule Parking: All parking will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that Larry Holmes Drive in front of Scott Park will be closed to allow for easy walking and access to the plunge area. There are numerous metered parking spots and lots available within a short walk of Scott Park. Shoes: All plungers must wear shoes into the water. Bare feet are not allowed for safety reasons. The Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) remains silent on new Marcellus Shale drilling regulations for the Delaware River watershed as commission members from New York work on completing their regulatory update, according to a State Impact report. In the meantime, pipeline construction in Pennsylvania is booming. Smaller lines from wellheads, as well as large interstate lines, will go below rivers and streams. Activists who want the DRBC to ban gas drilling also want the commission to start weighing in on pipelines near waterways which feed the Delaware. Roads in eastern Pennsylvania flooded by days of heavy rain

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are "strongly urging motorists to avoid all unnecessary travel in eastern Pennsylvania, including the area from Harrisburg north to the New York border, east to the New Jersey border and south to the Maryland border" in an alert issued at midday. The National Weather Service says there's still a chance of heavy rain in Lehigh and Northampton counties this afternoon. As of 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Interstate 80 was closed in both directions from Exits 232 to 236 and Interstate 81 was closed in both directions between Exits 90 and 100.
