Santa Will Reply to Letters from Children in Emmaus Patch

Thanks to a very special U.S. Postal Service program, "Santa" will reply to children who mail him their Christmas wish lists this holiday season.

Every year, millions of children sit down to make a wish list for Santa, hoping he will make all of their Christmas dreams come true. But what if Santa actually wrote back? The United States Postal Service is now accepting "Letters From Santa," a program that allows any person to play Santa by sending a letter signed by Saint Nick to any child. According to a postal service news release, "The 'Letters From Santa' program helps parents fulfill the dreams of their own children." Instructions to send a letter from Santa: In Emmaus Patch, letters to Santa can be dropped off at any post office location. TELL US: Do your children or children in your family plan on writing a letter to Santa this year?

Safety Tips for Holiday Lights

As you decorate your home with lights this holiday season, it's important to follow important safety tips.

As you decorate your home with lights this holiday season, it's important to follow important safety tips. Holiday lights using light emitting diodes (LEDs) use 90 percent less energy than traditional bulbs, according to NSTAR, a utility company. Today's LED lights are much more durable and can last years longer. For example, operating 10 strings of mini-LED lights compared to 10 strings of standard mini-lights can save nearly $12 in energy costs in one month.

Last year, "layaway angels" brought generosity and surprise to shoppers across the Lehigh Valley

Will a new wave a "layaway angels" hit stores this holiday shopping season? In 2011, a trend of anonymous shoppers paying off lawaways for strangers made headlines across the United States and in the Lehigh Valley. Layaway angels paid off at least $7,000 worth of purchases in Bethlehem last year. Tell us if you hear any reports of layaway angels in the Lehigh Valley. Send e-mail to susan.koomar@patch.com. Store managers chose layaways that were delinquent and that included children's toys, figuring the layaway angels would have the biggest impact by covering those purchases. Managers then called the layaway customers to inform them of their good fortune. The wave of generosity hit the Tilghman Street store in South Whitehall and a store in…

Christmas Village located at City Hall in Downtown Philly has the same vibe and is set up the same way.....big difference, it's free and to walk thru there you don't feel the 'stares' of those looking down their noses at the 'riff-raff' they allowed in. But then, you'd have to go to 'big bad Philly' to see that. I have also seen the same set ups in NYC as well.....   more ›

Take This Children’s Book List Gift Shopping

Easton youth services librarian recommends books that make great gifts for children and teens.

My method of picking out good books for my children has a lot to do with looking at the cover, reading the blurbs on the back and winging it. Which, as you can imagine, has mixed results. A couple of years ago I bought a book for my younger son that turned out to be horribly depressing with the protagonist committing suicide. My son hasn’t let me forget it. So I find recommendations from youth services librarians to be invaluable for gift buying around the holidays. Today’s recommendations and descriptions come courtesy of Audrey Kantner, youth services coordinator for Easton Area Public Library.  “I Love My Daddy” by Giles Andreae. “A father and child enjoy special time together playing on the swings, singing and dancing, having snacks …
