Principal Anthony Moyer will choose parents from five developments.
Willow Lane Principal Anthony Moyer will populate the long-awaited parent committee at a public drawing at noon Friday at the school. In a letter to parents who expressed interest in being a part of the committee, he sent an open invitation to join him for the drawing. Ten parents will be chosen, two each from five developments that surround the school: Beaumont at Brookside, Brandywine Village I and II, Brookside Farms, and Graymoor. Moyer's letter also said that he plans to send another letter confirming participation on the committee along with the first meeting date. The East Penn School Board changes its busing practice for elementary schools, shortening the distance students must live from schools to qualify for a bus ride.
East Penn Board of School Directors on Monday shortened the distance its elementary school students must live from schools to qualify to ride a school bus. In an 8-0 vote with one abstention, the board changed the district’s practice of providing busing to students who live 1.5 miles and farther from their schools to those who live within .75 of a mile. The practice of automatically providing busing to students who live within a certain distance of a school is called "courtesy busing." Currently all Willow Lane students are eligible to be bused. For the most part Monday night’s meeting of the East Penn Board of School Directors was all about Willow Lane Elementary School busing, but no definitive action was taken nor was any progress made. 1. East Penn School Director Julian Stolz proposed a motion at the Jan. 14 school board meeting that the district continue to fund buses for those Willow Lane Elementary School students now bused to school in the proposed 2013-2014 budget.
The controversy over who will and will not be bused to Willow Lane Elementary School in the fall continues to drive the agenda of the East Penn Board of School Directors. Tonight, the board will vote on a motion proposed by Director Julian Stolz at the board’s Jan. 14 meeting. If passed, the measure would direct the administration to continue to fund transportation for those Willow Lane students currently being bused to and from school in preparing the 2013-2014 school budget. East Penn School District was criticized last week for what both Willow Lane parents and school board members have described as the administration’s failure to adequately publicize a Nov. 27 meeting to review the findings of a Willow Lane “Walkability Study.” East Penn Community Liaison Nicole Bloise confirms the board was never notified about the Nov. 27 meeting, but she says that is pretty much standard operating procedure as far as "parent meetings" are concerned. It was pretty much standing room only at Monday night’s meeting of the East Penn Board as droves of Willow Lane Elementary School parents came to try to convince board members it would be a bad idea to make Willow Lane a “walking school” beginning with the 2013-2014 school year. Seventeen parents of Willow Lane students addressed the board for nearly one hour during the public comment portion, asking the board to rethink its decision regarding Willow Lane busing and offering to work with the board to come up with a solution that meets both the safety needs of the students and the financial concerns of the school district. Motion to take $60,000 from the budgetary fund reserve to pay for buses for Willow Lane is tabled until the Aug. 13 meeting of the East Penn Board of School Directors.
The East Penn Board of School Directors voted 5-3 last night to table a motion to use $60,000 from the budgetary reserve fund to reinstate busing for students who live within 1.5 miles of Willow Lane Elementary School. The motion, made by School Director Julian Stolz, came at the end of a meeting that began with nearly 30 minutes of public comment by Willow Lane parents who came out to urge the board to reconsider its decision to eliminate busing for those Willow Lane students living within “walking distance” of the school. If the East Penn 2012-2013 district budget passes tonight in a similar form to the proposed final budget approved by the board on May 14, 2012, busing will be eliminated at Willow Lane Elementary School in Fall 2012.
The East Penn Board of School Directors will vote on the 2012-2013 school budget at tonight’s school board meeting. Unless there is a significant deviation between the spending plan put before the board tonight and the proposed final budget approved by the board at its May 14 meeting, busing at Willow Lane Elementary School will officially become a thing of the past when the board approves the final budget tonight.
