Emmaus Council Gives $80,000 Back to Fire Department

Emmaus Borough Council votes to add $80,000 back into budget line item for paid on-call shifts; Emmaus Borough taxes will increase as a result.

The crowd was spilling out the door at Monday night’s meeting of Emmaus Borough Council, as nearly all of the 38 firefighters in the Emmaus Fire Department marched on borough hall to encourage council to reconsider a proposed 2013 budget cut that would eliminate paid overnight standbys at the fire station. In the end, council did vote, in a 4-3 split, to add $80,000 back into the line item for paid on-call shifts, bringing the total allocation up to $152,000. The 2012 allocation is $172,000. Borough Councilmen Brent Labenberg, Wesley Barrett and Nathan Brown opposed the decision. Taxes in Emmaus will need to be raised 1/8th of a mill to 4.325 mills to cover the $80,000. A final vote on the amended 2013 budget is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. …

Five Things to Know About the Emmaus 2013 Budget

Tax rate unchanged but bills rising for water, sewer, trash; taxpayers can view proposed budget in Borough Hall between today and the final budget vote on Dec. 17.

1. The Borough of Emmaus will not increase taxes in 2013, according to the proposed 2013 passed by Borough Council last night. Beyond that, things are a bit confusing. Right now, the tax rate for the 2013 budget is set at 4.20 mills. However, that rate could change slightly, according to Borough Manager Shane Pepe, depending on how reassessments at the county level play out. But Budget and Finance Committee Chair Brian Holtzhafer stressed that no matter what happens at the county level, the total amount of tax dollars coming into the borough will remain constant; the millage will simply be adjusted based on the county assessments. In an attempt to help clarify things, Councilman Brent Labenberg explained that the fact that the borough of …

And the 6th item to know (and the most important) is that the Fire Department's budget has been cut $117,000, and this will result in job cuts to a vital service provided. EFD will no longer be staffed around the clock 24/7, a service that has been provided for 17 years. The firefighters will now be responding from home, resulting in valuable time lost for emergency situations. Please come out to…   more ›

2013 Upper Milford Budget Workshop Tonight

Upper Milford Board of Supervisors agreed at its Oct. 4 meeting to hold special workshop meeting to begin delving into the 2013 township budget. That session is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 18 in the township building.

The Upper Milford Township Board of Supervisors will publicly delve into the 2013 budget for the first time tonight during a special workshop meeting specifically scheduled for that purpose. That meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. in the township building, comes two weeks after Township Manager Dan DeLong handed out copies of a draft budget he’d created to board members, telling them he was giving them a “head start” in the 2013 budget review process. As a next step, he recommended that the board schedule a workshop meeting. Tonight's workshop meeting will be followed by the board's regularly scheduled meeting at 7:30. In other business at the Oct. 4 Board of Supervisors meeting, the board agreed to split up a pair of older dump trucks in the…

Budget Season has Arrived in Upper Milford

The Upper Milford Board of Supervisors will hold a workshop meeting focused on the 2013 budget on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Township Building.

Upper Milford Township Manager Dan DeLong gave the Upper Milford Board of Supervisors a preliminary draft of the 2013 township budget at last night’s workshop meeting. “It’s a first draft," DeLong said. "It can be chewed up, spit out, added to, thrown away and started over.” Some of that chewing up will occur on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in the township building during a special workshop meeting approved last night that will be dedicated to the 2013 budget. Last night, DeLong told the board that he had highlighted certain unusual aspects of the budget for members to consider during the review process. In particular, DeLong explained, he pointed out places where the “revenue side was looking particularly good, due to special situational …
