Emmaus High School Track & Field team outdoes itself again for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
When the Emmaus High School Track and Field team was gearing up for its third St. Baldrick’s Foundation kids' cancer fundraiser, it was still very proud of the $39,921 it raised in 2011—as well it should have been. But the hope was to raise even more at its March 22 event, held at Emmaus High School, which it did. With 120 people shaved, a grand total of $47,700 was raised for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a California-based group that funds childhood cancer research. Shannon Petrunak, EHS Track & Field coach, thanked the honorees for their inspiration, the selfless shavees, hardworking volunteers, barbers and generous donors. “Emmaus is an awesome community, and I'm a very proud teacher, coach, VEO (Volunteer Event Organizer), and four-…

Donald Snyder, president of Lehigh Carbon Community College, told the board of trustees Thursday night he will undergo open heart surgery.
Lehigh Carbon Community College President Donald Snyder told the board of trustees Thursday he will extend his medical leave to undergo open heart surgery next Wednesday. Snyder, 61, said he expected to return to work in mid-July. Ann Bieber, senior vice president for administrative services, will serve as acting president. Snyder, who had returned to work Monday after a brief medical leave, read a short statement to the board: "For the past few weeks there has been much speculation and rumors about my absence on the college campus. As the board knows, which was also reported in some of the media, I've been on medical leave for the past month. During that time I've continued to receive medical treatment for some symptoms I was experiencing…

We have a school board candidate blogging on Patch and all local candidates are invited to do the same.
East Penn School Board candidate Ziad Munson is blogging on Patch and voters can gain insight into his perspective by reading his blog. Related story: Eight candidates are running for four seats on the East Penn School Board. Munson's latest blog post begins: Have you heard something like this before? "Schools are so inefficient. They are so poorly run," the complaint goes. And then, "if only schools were run like private businesses, things would improve." No! Public schools are not businesses. Nor should they be. And the model of private business is not appropriate for improving public education. Munson goes on to give reasons supporting his stance. You can read his complete blog post here. Do you agree that schools should not be run like …

Principal Anthony Moyer will choose parents from five developments.
Willow Lane Principal Anthony Moyer will populate the long-awaited parent committee at a public drawing at noon Friday at the school. In a letter to parents who expressed interest in being a part of the committee, he sent an open invitation to join him for the drawing. Ten parents will be chosen, two each from five developments that surround the school: Beaumont at Brookside, Brandywine Village I and II, Brookside Farms, and Graymoor. Moyer's letter also said that he plans to send another letter confirming participation on the committee along with the first meeting date. Twenty-three parents expressed an interest to join the committee -- too many for all to be included, Superintendent Thomas Seidenberger said at Monday's meeting. …

Emmaus Police have made two arrests in connection to four bomb hoaxes at Emmaus High School, prompting school officials to consider relaxing restrictions on bathroom access, East Penn Superindentent of Schools Thomas L. Seidenberger says.
Restrictive bathroom policies at Emmaus High School may be “normalized” now that a second student has been arrested in relation to one of the four separate bomb threats made against Emmaus High School between Dec. 20 and March 12, East Penn Superintendent of Schools Thomas L. Seidenberger says. A 16-year-old sophomore boy, accused in connected with a March 12 bomb hoax, was charged with making terroristic threats in juvenile court on March 20, according to Emmaus Police. A ninth-grade girl, accused of making the Dec. 20 bomb threat, was charged previously. Police are still investigating bomb threats made on Feb. 21 and Feb. 26. Since some of the threats were made through notes left in the bathroom—possibly written on bathroom mirrors, …

Special to Emmaus Patch by Victoria Laczo These days teens are all too familiar with stress, whether it be from work, school, sports, or from any other aspect of life. Far too often stress directly impacts life in a negative way. In today's demanding society, the pressure to succeed is at times insurmountable. Teens struggle to cope with high levels of stress and the continual pressure to succeed, but the question remains—is it just too much? Academic factors contribute significantly to stress in teens, especially those involved in advanced classes. With looming decisions about college and where to go, it is too easy to get swallowed up by anxiety. Many teens find themselves buried in books and schoolwork for hours after an already long …

Julian Stolz is grateful the East Penn Board of School Directors has not censured him.
After several meetings at which East Penn School Director Julian Stolz was the topic of several public comments, Monday night's school board meeting was surprisingly Stolz-free until he spoke up just before it was adjourned. Over the past month or so, some associations and posts that Stolz wrote on Twitter were deemed vulgar and extremely insulting to the students of the East Penn School District. Some parents called for his resignation. Other parents wanted the board to censure him, a move that Stolz called "a slap on the wrist." "I'd like to take a moment to thank my fellow board members," he said as he began a statement thanking them for not taking the suggestion of some parents to censure him. "Last meeting, you were asked to draft a …
