Salem United Methodist Church

Salem Methodist celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2004. Two features make this small church visually unusual, one is an old horse shed just above the church. It's easy to imagine a time when church-goers parked their buggies beneath that shed and led their horses into the long-gone corral. Another visual anomaly is a glass-walled meeting room between the church building and the cemetery. Originally conceived as a picnic pavilion, the Gerald Jacoby Pavilion was built in 2009. Solar heat keeps the otherwise unheated structure warm enough to use 10 months out of the year. In summer, of course, it sometimes is too warm to use, even though some of its windows do open.

Salem United Methodist Church is a small country church with a membership of 100+. On Sunday morning, it has Church School for infants to adults from 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM & Worship at 10:30 AM. Between the 1st Sunday in June & the 3rd Sunday in Sept. there is only 10 AM Worship w/optional children's church. The entire Sunday Worship Service is displayed on the overhead as well as printed in the bulletin. There is extensive use of visual aides used during Worship. The sound system is one of the best in the area. Members assisting in leading Worship range from youth to seniors in their 90's. The sanctuary has vibrant wood work & stained glass windows from the early 20th Century. The church is active, serving the community, country & the world. It actively supports the Zionsville Area Food Pantry & UMCOR, one of the first organizations on the scene in times of disaster throughout the USA and the world. In addition to the main church building, the Gerald Jacoby Pavilion is a 32' X 56' fellowship area that was recently enclosed in 2009. Sliding windows with screens & upper level vent windows provide cross ventilation when desired. With surrounding glass (totally 360 degrees), there is a feeling of being immersed in nature. Also on the property is an historic horse shed that gives a 19th century background for pictures and events in contrast to the modernistic appearing pavilion.
