Summer Movie: The Return of the Jedi

The older I get, the more of a traditionalist I become.

Reeses Peanutbutter Cups are supposed to be covered in milk chocolate. And they surely aren’t supposed to be an inch and a half thick.

Kids are supposed to get out when they play baseball. Everyone batting every inning makes everyone in the stands a little hostile. And, it creates a bunch of spoiled little people who cry hysterically when they don’t get invited to a classmates’ birthday party.

Carrots are supposed to be orange, not purple or whatever bizzaro color the ones I recently saw in Wegmans are.

And, when it comes to Star Wars, the original three movies, which are labeled IV, V and VI in the series, far surpass the new ones. Star Wars IV: A New Hope first introduced us to Luke, Leia, and the yummy Hans Solo (played by the still yummy Harrison Ford) in 1977 and the series progressed from there.

In fact, it has now evolved into an ongoing TV series on the Cartoon Network known as Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Since one apparently isn’t supposed to watch the Star Wars movies in order (George Lucas, for some reason unknown to the rest of us released the movies out of order to begin with) our movie pick for the week is Star Wars VI: The Return of the Jedi.

Return of the Jedi, released in 1983, culminates with the ultimate good vs. evil battle between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader and its only real flaw is it doesn’t feature nearly enough of the yummy Hans Solo.

Return of the Jedi airs tonight (Saturday, July 7) on Spike at 5:30 and 8:45 p.m. Spike airs the entire Star Wars movie series often, so if you channel surf you can often catch them running in an-all day marathon or on back-to-back days.
