Furnace Dam Playground Temporarily Closed

Heavy rains result in severe tree damage leading to park's closure.

Tuesday's heavy rains led to the demise of a large cherry tree at Furnace Dam Park at the corner of S. 10th and Furnace streets.

At 5 p.m. several Emmaus police officers were called to tape off the area surrounding the playground at Furnace Dam in order to prevent injury.

A large and slightly diseased cherry tree, heavy with ripened berries, failed to withstand the heavy rains, ultimately breaking down the trunk and falling onto the large play structure at the park.

The extent of damage to the playground and surrounding split-rail fence is not clear until Emmaus Parks Department employees are able to safely remove the fallen tree.
