Five Things to Know Today: August 23

The Emmaus Community Pool is closed and feeding geese in the borough just got very expensive.

1. Planning on feeding the geese at Furnace Dam Park? Think again. The borough just approved an ordinance permitting police to fine those who feed the water fowl at borough parks. .    

2. The first day of school for East Penn School District is Monday, Aug. 27. Have you done your school shopping yet?

5. Today in History: Despite massive protests, anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were executed on this day in 1927. The Italian-born immigrants were convicted of killing the paymaster of a Massachusetts shoe factory and his guard. Anti-radical passions in the U.S. were running high at the time and much of the evidence against them was later discredited. In 1977, Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis issued a proclamation vindicating them.
