UMYA Plans Columbus Day Soccer Tournament

Tournament is designed for recreational players.

Matt Skekel, coordinator of Upper Milford Youth Association’s soccer program, wanted to give UMYA players the opportunity to play in a tournament and develop more on the field. So he’s put together the first ever UMYA Columbus Day Fall Soccer Tournament on October 8 and 9.

Skekel says, "There are very few recreational soccer tournaments in the area. They’re all for travel and premier teams and can be very competitive. Our tournament will be competitive, and scores and standing kept, but we will be considered a recreational tournament."

By recreational, Skekel means, "a developmental program to help kids learn the fundamentals of soccer while enjoying the game played with friends and neighbors."

No Travel or Premier teams will be permitted to play, according to Skekel. "Although our teams ‘travel’ between games they are not considered travel teams because we do not have tryouts and do not participate in one of the more competitive leagues in the area."

The tournament is open to both boys and girls, with registration $100 for U8 teams and $150 for U10/U12 teams. Girls will play Saturday, October 8 and boys will play Sunday, October 9. U8 teams are scheduled for in Zionsville; U10/U12 teams will play at in Emmaus. Games will be held rain or shine.
