Take our Poll: Should East Penn Open Before Labor Day?

It's not a done deal yet, but the East Penn School District's working 2012-2013 calendar has an August start date.

The proverbial fat lady hasn't yet sung, but it seems as though kids in the may find themselves heading back into the classroom before the community pools close for the summer.

The 2012-2013 school calendar is scheduled to come before the East Penn Board of School Directors for approval at the board's Feb. 13 meeting, according to Nicole Bloise, East Penn community liaison, and .

Arguments in favor of the early start include the ability to better cope with snow days, while those against it cite everything from infringement on summer vacations to impact on summer jobs.

Now we want to know what you think. Take our poll.

It is only a few days early, I would love to see them add a few days off in Feb, March, or April for a real spring break.

I think school should go to a year-round schedule 12 week semesters with a month off in-between semesters. The same with college.

They should continue to go back after Labor day. Most families take a vacation Labor Day weekend when vacation homes are at Mid Season pricing and not Prime Season pricing. Why start school earlier, only to have off for Labor day anyway. Does not make sense.

my family never took a vacation the week of Labour Day and MOST I knew didn't either

We vacation that week, as do many of our peers. It is less than appropriate to change the start of school when many, many people have already made travel arrangements and paid deposits. The superintendent originally said that this change would be announced by December...now he has put it off until February. This is disrespectful. A change for 2012-2013 should be off the agenda at this point; they should have given parents much more notice of such a major decision.
