Students can win $1,000 in Essay Contest

The essay contest is sponsored by The Bill of Rights Institute in Arlington, Va., whose mission is to educate young people about America's founders, founding documents and founding principles.

Attention students: here's an opportunity to win some cold, hard cash. The Bill of Rights Institute is holding a national “Being an American” essay contest. Any student in grades 9-12 can participate. In 1,000 words or less, you must explore the founding principles outlined in the Constitution and answer the question: “How does the Constitution establish and maintain a culture of liberty?”

The top three student winners in each geographical region (ours is the North Eastern) will walk away with the prize money -- $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place. Plus, the teacher sponsors of each student will receive $100.

  • Adherence to essay question
  • Originality
  • Organization
  • Writing style
  • Depth of analysis.

Each essay must be submitted by December 15 at 11:59 p.m. PST (that's December 16 at 2:59 a.m. EST) at www.BillofRightsInstitute.org/Submit.

The essays will be judged by high school teachers and the winners will be announced in February of 2012.
