LMMS Student Explores Jobs Through Interview Project

A 6th grade student at Lower Macungie Middle School learned about diverse spectrum of jobs through community interview project.

Special to Patch by Jeremy Sanville, Lower Macungie Middle School 6th Grade Student

My 6th grade Language Arts class has been doing these interviews with members of our community. I can honestly say it has been a great learning experience for me.

It started with my teacher assigning the project to do an interview with a community member. To do this project my teacher allowed us to utilize technology inside and outside of the classroom. For example, to record my interview I used the voice recorder on my cell phone.

I chose my band teacher and I learned a lot about him. For example, he reads magazines that help him deal with his personal life. In addition, my teacher set up interviews with other people such as her husband. I learned that he works in sales for a chemical company. His company makes the adhesive that sticks the tops of cereal boxes together. Our last interview was with a Coopersburg native who works as an editor for a major radio news station. I learned that he goes all over the world to do his job. His job has taken him to places such as Paraguay. He also has had some very special experiences while doing his job. For example, he’s gotten to come very close to the president by being in the White House Press Room. Both of these interviews were possible by using Skype. We used the video chat option to interview them at their offices.

In all the jobs you’ve read about, they had to use reading and writing in some way. In conclusion, whether it’s reporting for a news station, working in sales for a chemical company, or teaching the next generation of musicians, reading and writing are the skills you will use your whole life.
