Zionsville Food Bank Gets 1,470 Items from Lincoln Students

Lincoln Elemenatary School decided to mark the 100th day of school a little differently this year. In addition to 100-item fashion shows and paper chains of 100 books, the school decided to give something back to the community through its first-ever 100th day of school donation drive -- a non-perishable food drive to benefit the Zionsville Food Pantry.

The way the drive worked was pretty simple - each grade in the school -- K through 5 -- was challenged to bring in 100 non-perishable items during the week of Feb. 4 through Feb. 8.

Parent volunteers through the Lincoln PTO helped to count and sort the items and deliver them to the food bank.

According to official tallies, Pete Verile's 5th-grade class has the honor of collecting the most for the week -- a whopping 266 items -- and Lincoln gathered a total of 1,470 items in all.

"It was a great success," writes Lincoln PTO Secretary Jen Anders in an email message to Emmaus Patch. "The food pantry was thrilled with the donation. They currently serve over 320 people with one-third being children. This was our first big food drive. Beth Sharpless and myself counted each item and I had a few helpers load and deliver the food."
