Congrats Emmaus Kiwanis 2013 Scholarship Winners

Four graduating Emmaus High School seniors were selected for 2013 Kiwanis Club Scholarships in recognition of their high school achievements.

The Emmaus Kiwanis Club recently awarded its 2013 scholarships to four Emmaus High School graduating seniors, according to a press release. 

Pooja Joshi of Macungie was chosen to receive the $2,000 Walter Stoudt Memorial Scholarship, which honors the first president of the Emmaus Kiwanis Club, founded in 1951. Joshi, who will be attending Philadelphia University majoring in Occupational Therapy. She was selected for the scholarship based on her record of service to the school and her community, and academic performance. Joshi is a past officer of the Emmaus High School Key Club.  

Gabriel Shankweiler of Allentown will receive the $1,250 Warren Hamscher Memorial Scholarship, which honors the second president of the Club, and recognizes scholastic and athletic leadership. Shankweiler, who will be pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., was selected for this award based on his record of leadership in multiple mens’ athletic programs.

The Larry Carraher Memorial Scholarship honors another past president of the Emmaus Kiwanis Club.  It recognizes the success of a scholar-athlete in his or her Emmaus High School career. Meghan Paradise of Macungie will be receiving this $1,000 scholarship, based on her serving as Captain in Women’s Varsity Soccer, and serving in leadership positions in multiple academic and service organizations.  Paradise will be attending Penn State University, majoring in Physical Therapy and Kinesiology. The winner of this award is chosen by the family of Larry Carraher, and is funded through his estate.

Macungie resident Kayla Higley will be receiving the $500 Emmaus Kiwanis Service Award, given to that graduating senior who demonstrates service to the school and the community. Higley was a vice-president of the Emmaus High School Key Club, active in the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, and captain of Women’s Varsity Softball. She will be attending Temple University, majoring in Biochemistry with a pre-dental focus.
