East Penn Schools, Offices Closed Tuesday

Expected bitterly cold temperatures cause East Penn School District to call for another school closing on Tuesday.

East Penn School District will be closed on Tuesday, according to a recorded message from Superintendent of Schools Thomas L. Seidenberger to East Penn parents and caregivers on Monday evening.

No transportation will be provided for any public or non-public student of the East Penn School District.

During the day on Monday, the National Weather Service said that the temperature would drop about 40 degrees by the end of the day, falling to an overnight low of about 3 degrees throughout the region before the wind chill is factored in.

A wind chill advisory is in effect for Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton and Philadelphia counties, and will remain in place until 6 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

I barely understand why schools are closed, but why in the world is the office closed too? The rest of the free world that works is at work, why are district employees and teachers coddled like this? I'm sure there is work to be done, get in there and do it already.

Teachers are union workers, who work a fixed number of days (I at think 188 EPSD), so for them, normally the days will be made up, at worst delaying the start of their summer vacations. For maintenance workers, many are likely working overtime getting the schools ready. For administrators and other salaried office workers, your question is less easily answered. But some office workers might be hourly and lose pay.
