What if?

What possibilities go unexplored because of our own limited thinking?

What if...seems to be a phrase the takes my mind off the leash of routine thought patterns. Of course, once off the leash, my mind can bound into the brambles and thorns of worry, imagining “what if” the most awful scenarios. But even off the leash, I can gently nudge my mind in a direction that is much nicer.

My favorite “what if” is, “What if none of the limiting beliefs I have about myself and my capabilities is true? What would I be doing if...” What if I really were smart enough, young enough, old enough, healthy enough...to ____________.  We can all fill in the blank with desires we have that lay just beyond the barrier of our limits. There are many small steps we’d be taking if we could just get beyond that barrier of our belief.

Moving beyond the barrier is how great discoveries and accomplishments happen.  What if we really could travel to the moon? What if the world wasn’t flat? What if I could learn to paint at 70? What if peace in our lifetime was possible? What if I could make a difference in the life of a child? What if... What could I be doing right now if I got beyond the barrier?

The Bible says “For nothing will be impossible with God." (Luke 1:37 NRSV)  Robert Browning says, “There is an inmost center in us all, where truth abides in fullness;...and, to know, rather consists in opening out a way where the imprisoned splendor may escape, then in effecting entry for a light supposed to be without.”

Today, consider the possibility that nothing that you believe about the barriers in your life is true and then see what you might do to move in the direction of the greatness of your dreams.
