New Weight Limit Announced for 2 U. Milford Bridges

The Upper Milford bridges are two of 85 state-owned bridges in a six-county region that will be posted with a new weight limit, according to PennDOT.

PennDOT has announced a new weight restriction for a two bridges in Upper Milford Township:

--The PA 29/PA 100 bridge over Indian Creek will be posted 31 tons or 40 tons for combination loads, according to a news release.

--The PA 29 over Norfolk Southern Rail Road will be posted 30 tons or 38 tons for combination loads, the release said.

The bridges represent two of 85 state-owned spans in PennDOT District 5’s six-county region that "will be posted with new or lowered weight restrictions to slow the rate of deterioration of those bridges and ensure safety," the release said. The six-county region is made up of Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, Monroe, Schuylkill and Berks counties.

"Those structures are among about 1,000 structurally deficient bridges statewide that PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch authorized for new or added weight restrictions on Thursday," the press release indicated.

"PennDOT must take this step because of legislative inaction this past June on transportation funding, leaving the department’s future resources in question. Reducing the weight traveling on these bridges will slow down their deterioration and preserve safety while funding for their repairs remains uncertain," it added.
