Emmaus Named 2013 Sustainable Community

The Lehigh Valley Branch of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council recognized the Borough of Emmaus for initiatives and policies that promote sustainable living at an awards celebration Oct. 17.

The Borough of Emmaus received the Sustainable Community Award from the Lehigh Valley Branch of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council at an awards celebration held at Muhlenberg College last week, according to a press release.

Emmaus was recognized for the implementation of initiatives and policies that promote sustainable living, the release says. Among the initiatives cited were:

  • the implementation of an LED (light-emitting diode) red light replacement program
  • the implementation of an energy analysis at different borough facilities
  • taking a proactive stance in separating storm water from the sewer system long before federal mandates
  • expanding recycling efforts
  • creating the largest municipally owned compost program in Lehigh County, which included taking possession of all county-owned equipment and implementing a program that allows all county municipalities to share the equipment,
  • conducting a watershed rehabilitation project at Leibert's Creek
