Violent Man Rams Police Cruiser, is Subdued with Taser

Disturbance call ends in smashed vehicles, chase and use of stun gun to arrest suspect, police say.

A man reported to be violent and destroying an Emmaus residence on Monday intentionally rammed a borough police car to elude capture and had to be subdued with a Taser following a foot chase, according to .

The incident sent one officer and the suspect to a hospital, according to borough police.

Police were called to 410 Eagle Drive at 6:11 p.m. for a report of a man who was violent and destroying the residence, police said. The officer found Joshua Lee Stevens, 21, attempting to leave the home in a vehicle. Police did not say whether Stevens resided at the address.

Stevens' vehicle nearly ran over the responding officer, according to police.

A second Emmaus officer arrived and Stevens used his vehicle to intentionally ram that officer's patrol car head on, police said. The impact deployed airbags in both vehicles.

Stevens next ran from the scene, police said. Borough officers were assisted by police from Macungie and a K9 unit from Salisbury Township in tracking Stevens.

Pursuing police found Stevens in woods behing the in the 1100 block of Chestnut Street, police said. He continued to resist arrest before being subdued by a Taser.

He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for evaluation and upon release faced charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and driving without a license, police said.

The unnamed police officer who was in his vehicle at the time of the collision was treated at LVH for moderate injuries and released, police said.
