Woman Killed Walking Across I-78 Ramp

Police say Allentown driver could not stop in time.

A 22-year-old woman walking across a ramp to Interstate 78 was struck and killed by a vehicle early Tuesday, according to police.

The woman was not identified by because her next of kin had not yet been notified, according to a news release.

The woman was walking east across the ramp from Hamilton Boulevard north to I-78 eastbound in Lower Macungie Township at 5:36 a.m., police said. The vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, driven by Zachary James Edwards, 19, of Allentown, was driving up the ramp and was unable to stop before hitting the woman.

The woman was taken to , where she was pronounced dead, according to police.

Edwards' vehicle received moderate damage, police said.

and responded to the call, police said.

Traffic was diverted during the morning rush hour at the time of the accident and subsequent investigation.
