Stolen Traffic Light Generators Cause Emmaus to Remove Rest

The borough’s two newest generators, which were being used to power traffic lights in the borough, were stolen yesterday, according to Emmaus Borough Councilman Nathan Brown, who learned about the theft from Emmaus Fire Chief Jim Reiss.

Emmaus Borough Councilman Nathan Brown got some upsetting news when he checked in with the Emmaus Fire Department Wednesday morning to see how the guys are holding up in the days following Hurricane Sandy’s visit.

Brown learned from Emmaus Fire Chief Jim Reiss that the two new generators that the borough had purchased for the fire department last year had been stolen. They were being used to power traffic lights in the borough and the chains that were used to attach them to the traffic light poles had been cut.

According to Brown, Reiss had told him that the generators were taken at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. As a result of the theft, Brown said, the borough decided to remove the remaining four generators powering traffic lights in the borough.

The borough is not legally obligated to power the traffic lights, Brown explained. It had merely been using the generators in the name of public safety.

Brown said that as far as he knows, the only traffic light in the borough that was still functioning is at Cedar Crest and Chestnut streets. He said that light may be powered by the emergency power at the Weis Market.

According state law, when a traffic light is dark, it becomes a four-way stop sign.

I asked that in a supervisors meeting months ago. with widespread power outages I think the stop signs works just as well, Macungie and Uppermilford seems to be working fine. Yes the wait is a little longer, but people are being very courteous.

Were they chained down at all? Or just sitting there.

They were chained to the traffic light pole.

Residents should be on the lookout for a neighbor that has a generator now that didnt have one before Wednesday. There were none to be found anywhere in any stores.

I believe the stolen ones were Honda brand generators. But to respond to Mike, Amazon has been shipping them this week, so don't become too suspicious if you see people with generators that didn't have them before. They are available online if people can get online to order them.

Frustrated people doing ridiculous things. It's becoming the American way....if there is something you want and can't get it immediately just take someone else's. It's a sad statement but seems to be more and more true each year.

People are dying because they run their generator in the garage because they'll lose them if they leave them outside. I don't appreciate them stealing public property either. Here's an idea for generator manufacturer's that might stiffle thieves. Add a keypad to the generator. You can't start it or turn it off without entering a code. People might get suspicious if someone is carrying a running generator. Also, once it run's out of gas it would be of no use to a thief if he doesn't have the code to restart it.

Serial code on the unit? @Edwin thats a great idea.

Unfortunately that is not the case in all areas, seen people on facebook posting they were almost hit or were hit at non working stoplights.

Too bad they can't do an inline generator, maybe if they can that is what they should look into instead of portable.
