State Police Report 53 Accidents Over Memorial Day Weekend

Special enforcement effort was aimed at keeping Lehigh Valley roads safe, they say.

The recent Memorial Day Weekend will be remembered differently by different people.

Many will remember tasty backyard barbecues and volleyball games. Some, patriotic parades. And others . . . speeding tickets or arrests for driving while intoxicated.

Yes, set out to make troopers visible this holiday weekend, but that was to prevent as many of us as possible from creating sad memories of those who needlessly lost their lives or were injured in traffic accidents. As it was, troopers reported 53 motor vehicle accidents that resulted in 23 injuries and one fatality in Troop M's coverage area of Lehigh, Northampton and Bucks counties.

Troopers put forth an extra effort this holiday weekend to keep highways safe, according to a recent news release. That effort resulted in 1,188 citations for the period of May 25 through 28 in the three-county area. Almost half of those were for speeding.

In addition, 73 were for seat belt violations, 14 for child passenger seat violations and 27 for driving while under the influence, the release said.

Of the 53 reported crashes, three were alcohol related, police said.
