Fire company: Citizens' Fire Co. of Upper Milford (Vera Cruz)

What's it like being a firefighter?

"Being an officer in the fire company takes dedication and commitment. It's a challenge, but satisfying for me, because I know I have done the best job I can."

How do your loved ones feel about you putting your life in danger?

"The hours are sometimes challenging for my family, but I make it work. Matt always asks, 'Is everything OK?' when the pager goes off. My husband works a second shift, so his hours are different than mine."

Tell us a story you'll never forget about your firefighting experience.

"I started with the fire company in 2004. One evening, the fire company had a fundraiser, 'Halloween Hayrides,' at my neighbor's farm. A fire police member was directing traffic coming for the event. I thought, 'This would be really cool to do.' I was hooked.

"I recently participated in parking cars and traffic at the Stellar Tournament and the Sportsfest. Next adventure is Homecoming at Vera Cruz and Wheels of Time parade.

"Whether it's a call in the middle of the night, streets closed for an accident, a parade for a neighboring community, or mutual support for a fire station, if available I am there."

What would you tell people interested in joining your fire company?

"Vera Cruz Fire Team works well together to get the job done. 'Everyone goes home,' (is our motto). Safety is the main goal and closing the job. It takes a compassionate, patient person."
