UPDATE: Emmaus Students Safe From Tsunami in Hawaii

Members of the Marching Band are in their hotel as waves hit the island chain.

News reports indicate that 45 members of the Emmaus High School marching band are holed up in their hotel room in Hawaii as tsunami waves hit the island chain.

East Penn School officials said they have heard from both Bruce Denmead, EHS Band Director, and Alan Earnshaw, School Board Member and trip chaperone, that everyone is safe.

"The students are all accounted for and in their rooms at the hotel," said East Penn Community Liaison Nicole Bloise in an email. "The hotel they are staying at, located on the southwest of the island, is new and built to earthquake and tsunami standards."

They band is Hawaii for the 2011 National Festival of the States.

A large 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit Japan and sent waves toward Hawaii and the island chain, making landfall before 3 a.m. this morning, according to reports.
