Emmaus Police Need Your Help in Preventing Crime

Sgt. Karl Geschwindt of the Emmaus Police Department says business owners must be the eyes and ears of the police.

Emmaus Police say they need business owners to be their “eyes and ears” in the community in the wake of five attempted burglaries of businesses in the Emmaus Shopping Center at 1328 Chestnut St.

“If you see anything suspicious, call the police department and let us come and check it out,” says Sgt. Karl Geschwindt of the Emmaus Police Department. “We’d prefer people to do that and have it turn out to be nothing, rather than not get called and have it be something.”

On Aug. 3, the police responded to an alarm at the Subway in the Emmaus Shopping Center, and a found attempted burglary. A subsequent check of surrounding businesses found burglaries at , , and , according to .

Geschwindt says the best thing that business owners can do to protect their businesses is to make sure that whatever security measures they have are in place when they leave for the day. Lock the doors and windows, he says, and if there’s an alarm system, turn it on.

Beyond that, Geschwindt says the police need the public’s help in determining when something irregular is going on.

“Be alert for anything that seems out of place,” he says. “We may not know what’s usual and unusual during the day.”

As an example of something out of the norm, Geschwindt describes a scenario in which someone comes into the business asking a lot of questions about who owns the business, how the business is run, how many employees it has, etc., and nobody else has ever come into the business and done that before.

Something like that, he says, warrants a call to the police.

“The police and the community are partners in reporting and solving crimes, and we need the community to be our eyes and ears,” Geschwindt says. “If you see anything suspicious call the police department and let us come check it out.”
