SUV Driver Hit Utility Pole, Escaped Injury, Police Say

Her SUV slid off the roadway as she was rounding a curve in Upper Milford, troopers report.

An Emmaus-area woman avoided injury recently despite her vehicle sliding off an Upper Milford Township roadway and into a utility pole and mailbox, according to police.

April A. Hollenthoner, 45, was traveling south on Vera Cruz Road at 7:35 p.m. Feb. 23, according to state police at Fogelsville. Her Ford Expedition began to slide as she tried to round a curve while approaching Quarry Drive.

Hollenthoner's sport-utility vehicle slid across the wet roadway, police said. The SUV sideswiped the utility pole with the left front portion of the vehicle. It next hit the mailbox head-on in front of 4777 Vera Cruz Road before coming to rest.

Hollenthoner was charged with driving at an unsafe speed, police said.

@Tad. Thank you for keeping us informed whith police and fire news in Emmaus and Upper Milford. Do you have any news on the two accidents on the turnpike in Upper Milford. I believe they happend on monday and wednesday. I heard there where maybe ten cars involved and ten people taken to hospitals and that Vera Cruz and Emmaus fire and rescue responded.

Ron, thanks for commenting. While the circumstances of police reporting often are unpleasant -- i.e.: a car accident, burglary, etc. -- it is a pleasure to inform Patch readers. We have tried this weekend to obtain the reports you're talking about. Yes, there were two accidents. A different state police barracks is responsible for responding on the Turnpike than on the standard roads of Upper Milford. We have been told to contact state police at King of Prussia Monday morning. We will try to bring you that account if they fax the reports on Monday. Thanks for pointing out those incidents. I believe they are significant.

Ron, Despite good intentions and several phone calls to state police at King of Prussia, I came up empty. There were two accidents on the Turnpike portion coming through Upper Milford last week. The first was on Feb. 25 in which a driver was hurt when his car got pushed into the center barrier. Two days later, one woman was somewhat seriously hurt and seven others were injured to a lesser degree in related accidents involving as many as eight vehicles. This information is from other published reports. Unfortunately, when I called as recently as yesterday, I was told that the troopers in both cases had not started the accident reports -- yes, a week later -- or had any news releases to offer. It sounds as if one account came from scanner transmissions that I did not hear and, in the second case, the reporter was able to reach police by phone for a few verbal details. We generally deal with state police at Fogelsville, but this section of the Northeast Extension is handled by the barracks at King of Prussia. Sorry to come up short, but thought you deserved what little I knew and an explanation.
