What Are Your Best Back-to-School Tips?

Parents: Give us your advice for helping kids off to a great start in the new school year.

Moms Talk is a weekly feature on all Lehigh Valley Patches in which local parents are invited to share opinions and advice on parenting issues.

This week’s Moms Talk topic relates to heading back to school:

With the kickoff of the 2011-2012 school year about three weeks away, what advice do you have for helping kids to transition from summer fun back into the classroom?

Join the conversation. Each week our Moms Council members discuss these and other issues.

Our Moms Council members include:

Fortunately, the child who is returning to school this fall has been missing it and is looking forward to returning (believe it or not). We did a few practice papers periodically throughout the summer, so that he has an idea that there will probably be a lot more reading and homework this year. My other child is starting kindergarten and is very excited. I usually lay low on Labor Day weekend so that we can get in the school mindset, and adjust the bedtime back accordingly.

year round school should be implemented.

Being that my oldest is just going to kindergarten this year, I am not able to really say how we get "geared up". It's a transition for everyone.

What advice do I have??!! That's hard. It's so hard to transition back to school and I'm not sure I do a great job at it! I always plan to start going to bed earlier and to wake the up earlier to get back into a routine, but it never happens!!! It's so hard to do. We tend to, instead, just jump right into it and battle through the tiredness for the first couple of weeks.
As far as actually getting back into the school frame of mind, the kids are usually ready to go by the end of August. They crave a routine and a schedule. So they are psyched for it anyway. Where has the summer gone???!!!
Megan Patruno August 15, 2011 at 12:44 am
So just stay enthusiastic and talk up the great new changes and new friends they will make. As well as seeing friends they may not have seen during the summer. Always go into the back to school season with a positive attitude.

I so agree! Almost 3 full months away from the structure of school and then school for almost 9 nonstop months is crazy! They get really burned out. They should have 2 months of school and then 2 weeks off.

This year is our first transition for back to school and I believe it will be very easy. My son has been asking to go back to school from the second week of summer break. He has enjoyed his summer activities but really missed school, not just his friends. I don't think that year round school would be a good idea, children and families need a break and going to school in the summer heat was always one of the worst experiences growing up. If summer break was much shorter then vacation places would be overrun with families during that short time and it would be probably even less affordable to take the kids on a trip, wherever that may be to.

My son is 11 and my daughter is 5 1/2....for my son's whole school life and now for my daughters...about 2 weeks before school, we get back into the routine we have for school. We have a bedtime Monday - Friday, we have our scheduled dinner and showers and such. I also do refreshers for an hour a day for each kid....so they have a jumpstart on the year. So for my son, we do some reading, multiplication tables, basic things he was at in English and Math at the end of his last school year. And being Nina is starting Kindergarten...we just go over the basics....alphabet, numbers, colors, days of the week, etc. It helps get me in the swing of things and helps get them in the swing of things as well. I don't make a bedtime a strict rule during the summer...so that is a big one in the house....so that usually takes the most transition...the bedtime/getting up thing. So as soon as I implement the bedtime, I also have them getting up at the hour they would for school. It has helped me a lot and Billy and Nina have benefited from it quite well. Good luck....it's not easy getting ready for the regiment again!

I don't think year-round school is a good idea. For starters, an already-taxed budget will be even tighter. What's good for the students is a no-brainer. Even though the summer seems endless, most students look forward to it. Also, years later summer time activities are fodder for happy memories. Having 2 months on and 2 weeks off as has been suggested is a horrible idea. Think of the added work for teachers and administrators with all the additional "start-ups" each year. Bad idea.

This county uses a 45 days in and 15 days out model for yr round school to increase school capacity. Kids and teachers still only have 180 days of school, but the breaks are more spread out. Looks great to me and eliminates having to build new schools.

That's an interesting concept, but it must make it impossible for families with multiple kids in school to plan a family vacation or summer / time off activities together.
Rosemary B August 16, 2011 at 07:12 pm
I would hope that they would be considerate enough to put kids from the same family on the same "track" so they would all be in school and out the same times. Would seem like common sense to me. But anything government runs seems to be lacking in common sense!

I am concerned. Emmaus is a part of your constituency and to the best of my knowledge you have notRead More had a Town Hall Meeting or any public meeting in this area. Why? Safety is as important in Lehigh County as in other counties and programs such as this should be made available to everyone.
