Bali – A family in need in the Island of the Gods

Bali. Been there, done that, got braided and bought the Bintang T.shirt. Not us. We go where few tourist venture. We drive, bike, and walk into villages, across hills and through green Padi fields. There is so much to experience just off the beaten track. We have travelled many times to Bali - The Island of the Gods. Aside from spending endless hours on the beach, entertaining two hyperactive boys is a full time job as mothers would know.

On a recent trip we opted to stay at a house away from the tourist strip and spent most of our days exploring busy narrow lanes. On a particularly steamy tropical day as we searched for something cool to drink, we spotted a small fridge in a gaming shop where local children sat intently on a mat, trying to outdo each other on Xbox games. Like magnets my boys were drawn into the group while I selected our drinks and sat on the concrete step making conversation with the young family. Komang, his pregnant wife Kadek and their daughter Dora, lived their life under the counter of this barely stocked shop. It was all they had in their attempt to better their lives. Sadly the gaming has stopped as the rent of the shop was beyond their means. But Komang slowed down only by his maimed leg, has not let this dampen his spirit to succeed. He now works on a commission basis for a tourist booking service in the heart of Kuta, the main tourist strip of Bali. He is a friendly young man who has a good heart, and speaks English with a distinct Aussie ‘How are ya mate.’ So if you know of anyone going to Bali please contact Komang to book tours, arrange transport or just to say Hi.
