Adults Only: Introducing "Groundbreaking Reads"

"Groundbreaking Reads" is a summer reading program for adults at the Emmaus Public Library.

“Groundbreaking Reads” is a summer reading program for adults at the Emmaus Public Library.

From June 3 to July 30, 2013 adults are invited to dig here for buried treasure.  In a library filled with books, there are bound to be some that are worth reading that you may have missed.  Look for books to read on the “Good Fiction You Might Have Missed” cart.

Another component of summer reading for adults is something that could be labeled “blind date" with a book.  Staring June 3, there will be a selection of books ready to check out, wrapped in plain brown or white paper with a brief description on the front.  You are asked to be adventurous and take these books home and read them.

Each book that an adult reads or listens to, in physical or electronic format, can be listed on a form and entered in one of the prize boxes at the library.  The drawing for the prizes will be held on Tuesday July 7 at 7 pm. (You need not be present to win.)

A special event on “Groundbreaking Technology” will be held Wednesday June 26.  This is an open-house type event from 2 – 8 pm to introduce people to ereaders and demonstrate the various downloading sites that are available free from the library website.  All that is needed is a library card to access these eBook, eaudiobooks, and magazines.  Library staff will demonstrate and help patrons with the Overdrive site for eBooks and eaudiobooks.  They will explain “One Click Digital” for eaudiobooks.  And staff will most happily show how to use the newest addition to the world of downloads – Zinio – for magazines.  You will be amazed at the items you can download to your tablet or phone.

Another special event is “Digging up Your Ancestors” by local genealogist Fay Cox on July 15 at 7 pm.  Fay will relate some of her experiences in researching her family history and provide helpful hints for the amateur genealogist.

All adults are welcome to participate.  It’s free and it’s fun.  Welcome summer reading!
