Five Ways to Enjoy More Fruits and Vegetables

March is National Nutrition Month.

March is National Nutrition Month, which is a nutrition education campaign sponsored by the American Dietetic Association. In conjunction with NNM, March 9 was the fourth annual Registered Dietician Day.

In fact, Lehigh Valley Dietetic Association President Jan Little and registered dietician Beverly Wachtmann came to Emmaus Borough Council March 7 to talk about the work of registered dieticians. In return, Mayor Winfied Iobst proclaimed March 9 as Registered Dietician Day for Emmaus.

The theme of NNM is "Eat Right with Color." The ideas is that the more colorful your food, the greater nutritional variety it will have. In the spirit of NNM, here's five ways to sneak more health into your diet.

  1. Make a habit of adding fruit to your morning oatmeal.
  2. Stuff a whole grain pita with ricotta cheese and Granny Smith apple slices.
  3. Banana split: Top a sliced banana with a scoop of low-fat frozen yogurt.
  4. Try crunchy vegetables instead of chips with your favorite dip or low-fat salad dressing.
  5. Add color to salads with baby carrots, grape tomatoes, spinach leaves or mandarin oranges.
