5.  This Day in History: On this day in 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment, providing for equality of the sexes, was passed by the senate. It was then sent to each state for ratification, but a conservative wave in the mid-1970s turned sentiment against what would have been the 27th Amendment to the Constitution. By the end of the 20th century, however, the federal government and all states had passed legislation protecting the rights of women.
