Five Things to Know Today: March 14

School Board meeting tonight.

1.  Weather: Mostly sunny with a high of 49, according to the National Weather Service, with a northwest wind between 5 mph and 13 mph. Sunrise is at 7:16 and sunset at 7:07, which gives us about 2 minutes and 42 seconds more daylight than yesterday.

2.  Meetings: The East Penn School Board meets tonight at 7 p.m. Under discussion is the proposed budget. (Agenda attached.) Gov. Tom Corbett just announced he plans to cut spending on public education. The Upper Milford Zoning Board is also scheduled to meet tonight at 7:30.

3.  In Case you Missed It: A mother and her adult daughter were found dead in their Alburtis home Friday. The county coroner said the manner of the deaths was homicide. Patch editor Mariella Savidge told the women’s story.

4.  Coming Up: The East Penn School District posted a survey on its website asking residents for ideas about reducing expenses and increasing revenue. Find out the results at noon.

5.  Today in History: On this day in 1964, Jack Ruby was sentenced to death for killing Lee Harvey Oswald in the first televised courtroom verdict in U.S. history. A Texas court of appeals overturned the decision on the grounds Ruby could not have received a fair trial in Dallas. Ruby died of lung cancer in 1967 while awaiting a new trial.
