Five Things to Know Today: Feb. 18

Do you know the history of Presidents Day?

1.  Weather: A slight chance of showers today, according to National Weather Service, but the risk is worth it, considering the high will be above 60. Sunrise is at 6:52 and sunset at 5:40, which gives us about 2 minutes and 31 seconds more daylight than yesterday.

2.  Presidents Day: East Penn schools are closed today and Monday for Presidents Day weekend. Presidents Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February to celebrate both George Washington, born Feb. 22, 1732, and Abraham Lincoln, born Feb. 12, 1809. A holiday for Washington dates back to 1832; in 1968 Congress made it a federal holiday, and then President Richard Nixon in 1971 combined Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays to create Presidents Day.

3.  In Case you Missed It: Two of the suspects in the KNBT Bank robbery have waived their preliminary hearings. The remaining suspect’s hearing was continued yesterday, Feb. 17, but the opposing attorney’s bickered over it.
