Columnist Margie Peterson Wins 1st Place Award

Margie Peterson won top category award in the Pennsylvania Women's Press Association for three Patch columns -- on death, school vouchers and gay marriage.

Patch columnist Margie Peterson is a first place winner in the Pennsylvania Women's Press Association journalism contest, for three columns published on Patch in 2011.

Peterson won in the Columns Category for:

"Margie's thoughtful and carefully researched columns have proven to spark lively discussions on our 11 Lehigh Valley Patch websites," said Patch Regional Editor Susan Koomar. "She has a faithful following from her tenure at The Morning Call and is now finding many new fans via local digital journalism.

Peterson has been a journalist for more than 25 years. Her first journalism job was with the Pottsville Republican, starting in 1985, where she worked as a reporter and columnist. In 1991 she went to work for The Morning Call in Allentown as a reporter and later, as a part-time copy editor and columnist. She began writing columns on Patch in January 2011. Peterson resides in Salisbury Township with her husband and two sons.

The Pennsylvania Women's Press Association, founded in 1937, recognizes journalism excellence in its annual contest. This year's award winners were honored June 2 at a reception at the Wyndham hotel in Gettysburg.

Other winners in the Column Category are: 2nd place, Eric Heyl, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review; 3rd place, Erin Negley, Reading Eagle; honorable mention, Salena Zito, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review; and honorable mention, Liz Allen, Erie Times-News.
