Da Vinci Science Center Premieres Visitor Gross Games July 6

Da Vinci Science Center (DSC) visitors will get in touch with their crusty, smelly, and slimy sides by competing in the Center’s Gross Games contests starting July 6, 2013.

The Gross Games will be held on five Saturdays in July and August and will complement both the Da Vinci Science Center appearance of GROSSOLOGY: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body and the Center’s Year of the Human Body project with St. Luke’s University Health Network. All contests will be open to visitors from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Developed to explain the natural – and sometimes nasty – things that happen inside a person’s body, the Gross Games include a tic-tac-toe game in which images of healthy and diseased toenails take the place of Xs and Os; a challenge to stretch fake boogers from a 19-foot-high balcony, a chance for visitors to create fake zits, and a relay race that features sanitizing stations and brown clay feces. Gross Medals will be awarded to winners for each contest’s morning session from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and afternoon session from 1-3 p.m.

The first contest on July 6, 2013 – titled The Perfect Stream – demonstrates how liquid waste is generated and removed as contestants use squirt bottles to fill buckets with fake urine. Contestants who complete the task in the shortest amount of time will win win a morning or afternoon Gross Medal. All Gross Medal winners also will have their photos posted on the Da Vinci Science Center’s website and Facebook page. Details of all Gross Games are available on the web at www.davincisciencecenter.org/grossgames.

Based on a popular children’s book series, GROSSOLOGY uses sophisticated animatronics and imaginative exhibits to show visitors the good, the bad, and downright ugly about runny noses, body odor, and more. GROSSOLOGY appears at the Da Vinci Science Center through Sept. 2, 2013. GROSSOLOGY also is sponsored regionally by the County of Lehigh, the Fleming Foundation, and the Arangio Family Orthopedic Fund.

The Da Vinci Science Center’s Year of the Human Body – the opening phase of the Center’s medical industry workforce initiative – also is supported by Capital BlueCross, Daiichi Sankyo, and Discover Lehigh Valley. Details of all Da Vinci Science Center workforce initiatives is available on the web at www.davincisciencecenter.org/workforce.
